Dancing

It started with Saturday afternoons in the 1950s and ‘60s, gliding all adolescent and silver-shod around the sprung floor at Marilyn Dearden’s School of Dancing. Eventually the quickstep was abandoned for the jive (alternate Saturday nights at the local Mission) and later The Twist (at Belmont Youth Club, between snogging sessions in the corridor between the loos and the kitchen).

From there it was only a small step to discovering traditional dance via the folk scene. Danced with Fidler’s Fancy Women’s Morris, Sheffield Celebrated Clog and Lizzie Dripping, before drifting away from the performing side of things in 2001. My mate Carol and I hooked up for a brief spell in 1997 as Reservoir Clogs. Irish set dancing filled the void for a few years until health stuff got in the way.
